Defensible space around your home

See how much ground around your home falls in each zone, and what to clear in each one.

Count the house, garage, sheds, barns and cottages.

A rough guide. Count an attached deck as part of the house. Each building's zones are counted on their own, so if buildings sit close together the real total is a bit smaller. Zones stop at your property line.

Top-down view of a house with three bands around it: Zone 0 from 0 to 5 feet, Zone 1 from 5 to 30 feet, and Zone 2 from 30 to 100 feet or to the property line.
The three zones. Not to scale.

What to clear in each zone

Tap what is done. CAL FIRE says Zones 1 and 2 are required by law. Zone 0 is the state's newer rule for the first 5 feet. The Board approved it in August 2026, but it is not in effect yet.

In unincorporated Sonoma County, the county's vegetation rules (Chapter 13A) also apply, with inspections from late spring. Check your address to see which rules cover you. (Permit Sonoma)

Some insurers now require the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home designation for new policies in high-risk areas, and it requires a clear 5-foot zone. What insurers look for · How to keep your insurance.
